LAST year’s winner Lethal Levi (Karl Burke) and Ascot Group 1 winner Art Power (Tim Easterby) head the weights for this year’s £180,000 Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup to be run on Saturday September 20.
The pair have been allocated 9-12 in the handicap, one pound clear of the Fozzy Stack trained Two Stars on 9-11, with last year’s Group 3 Firth Of Clyde Stakes winner here at Ayr, Sky Majesty (trained by Willam Haggas and part-owned by Brighton and Hearts investor Tony Bloom), the highest-rated 3 year-old in the race on 9-9.
The highest-weighted Scottish trained entry is Jim Goldie’s 9 year-old Jordan Electrics, with last year’s Gold Cup 5th having been allocated 9-3 ahead of expected runs at York and Doncaster before Ayr.
Last year’s Silver Cup winner Alfa Kellenic, now in the care of Ivan Furtado, has also been given 9-3, with the Katie Scott trained 2023 third-placed horse Gweedore, which is 58th on the list at the moment, on 8-9.
No Scottish trained horse has won the Gold Cup since Roman Warrior walked across the road from Cree Lodge Stables to win the race for trainer Nigel Angus in 1975 and, 50 years on, Jordan Electrics is, currently, the only Scottish-based horse guaranteed a place in the 25-runner Gold Cup before the next declaration stage on Monday September 15.
