THOMSON EYES BIG TARGETS AT CORAL SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL FESTIVAL

Borders based trainer Sandy Thomson is enjoying his best ever season and is already eyeing a couple of major end of the season prize pots at Ayr.

He recently welcomed the talented ten year-old chaser Yorkhill to his yard after David Armstrong bought him out of the Willie Mullins stable.

Formerly owned by Andrea and Graham Wylie and the winner of more than £320,000 in prize-money Yorkhill is being aimed at the Hillhouse Quarry Chase, a Listed Race, run on the opening day pf the coral Scottish Grand National Festival on Friday April 17.

The feature race on the Friday the Hillhouse has a prize fund of £45,000 and the 2m 4f trip would be ideal for the horse who won the Grade 1 JLT Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham back in 2017.

Another capture from a big yard for the Thomson stable is Stradivarius Davis who left Paul Nicholls at the end of the year and has had two runs for Sandy since in novice chases winning the second of those at Catterick last week.

This was a particularly impressive performance and afterwards his trainer said his target would be the £100,000 CPMS Novices’ Champion Chase on Coral Scottish Grand National Saturday.

This race was first introduced in 2018 and is a strong test for a novice but if Stradivarius Davis can build on the Catterick win he could have a good chance.

David and Donna Armstrong who own Yorkhill could have a second runner in the Hillhouse with Cool Mix, a course winner, who is trained by Iain Jardine.
