Ayr Racecourse stages its traditional New Year Raceday today (Wednesday) with a seven race card featuring some exciting contests.
The opening race, the Book For The Coral Scottish Grand National Maiden Hurdle, is due off at 12.30pm and trainer Tom Lacey sends his five year old Johnbb on the long trek from Hertfordshire with Aidan Coleman booked to ride.
Fife based trainer Nick Alexander is in good form and has several interesting runners during the afternoon including Not The Chablis in the Ayrshire Wedding Show January 26 & 27 Novices’ Hurdle at 1.35pm. This horse was fourth at the track in November.
The feature race is the Frazer Coogans Handicap Hurdle at 2.40pm and this Class 3 contest has attracted a field of eight runners.
Last year’s winner Elusive Theatre from the Larne yard of Stuart Crawford contests again while Carluke trainer Keith Dalgleish saddles Senor Lombardy with Brian Hughes riding. Recent course winner Road To Gold, trained by Nick Alexander, also runs.
The concluding race is the Happy New Year From Ayr Racecourse Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race where Nicky Richards runs Holme Abbey with Danny McMenamin riding.
Gates open at 11.00 am.
A five time Group race winner heads the entries for Thursday’s £65,000 William Hill Doonside Cup, Listed Race, the feature race of Doonside Cup Day which launches the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup Festival.READ MORE
THE 2018-2019 jumps season at Ayr Racecourse gets under way on Monday with a six race card. The action kicks off at 12.55pm with a two mile four furlong maiden hurdle which could see some southern based trainers sending young horses on the long trip north.READ MORE
