THE curtain came down on the 2018 Flat season at Ayr yesterday and Keith Dalgleish celebrated by saddling a first and second race double to clinch the trainers’ title at the track.
First up was Epona in the opening novice stakes. Given an enterprising ride from Rowan Scott the two year-old filly established a commanding lead and repelled the challenge of the heavily backed Pendleton to win by two and a quarter lengths.
Iconic Code, ridden by Joe Fanning, was Dalgelish’s second winner getting the better of Remember Rocky and County Fair in a thrilling three way finish to win by a neck.
The best backed winner of the afternoon came in the last race when Cubomania, trained in Ireland by Gordon Elliott, came with a late run to win by two and three quarter lengths in the 1m 5f handicap in the hands of Joe Fanning who was clinching the Ayr jockeys title.
Redarna followed up a course win nine days ago by winning division one of 7f Handicap for trainer Dainne Sayer and jockey Graham Lee and there was also a win for Roaring Forties for Rebecca Bastiman and David Allan in division two of the race.
A decision on whether Johnny Murtagh’s Urban Beat runs in Saturday’s £200,000 William Hill Ayr Gold Cup will be made after the three year-old runs in the opening Irish Stallion Studs Bold Lad Premier Handicap at the Curragh this afternoon.READ MORE
