Ayr Racecourse stages its first Flat meeting of 2019 on Wednesday with Tennent’s Raceday featuring eight races.
The feature race is the £50,000 Tennent’s Lager British Stallion Studs EBF Rothesay Stakes, a Listed race for fillies and mares, over 1m 2f in which jockey Andrea Atzeni attempts to keep his 100 per cent record at the Craigie track.
The Sardinian rider’s only mount at Ayr came in the same race back in 2017 when he rode Nezwaah for trainer Roger Varian and they duly won impressively before going on to win the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh.
This time round the jockey-trainer partnership team up on Shenanigans and the five year-old filly has been placed several times in Listed company and has the highest BHA rating of the six runners.
She certainly won’t have it her own way though as Coeur d’Amour, the first Ayr runner for Irish trainer Madeleine Tylicki, also has Listed race form in the book and has top Irish jockey Robbie Colgan while Exhort from the Richard Fahey yard wouldn’t have to improve much on what she has shown so far to figure here and will have Paul Hanagan’s help from the saddle.
A maximum field of 17 runners go to post in the Heverlee Handicap over the straight six furlongs and big Jim Goldie saddles four in this – Jessie Allan, Star Cracker, Brendan and Thorntoun Lady and North Yorkshire trainer Ruth Carr has five runners in Raffle King, Cupid’s Arrow, Tadaany, Loulin and Racquet.
Universal Gleam was an impressive winner at Hamilton on Friday night and is turned out quickly with a 5lb penalty for Keith Dalgleish and Joe Fanning in the Orchard Pig Handicap over a mile.
The first race is at 2.00pm with gates open at 12 noon.
