The traditional New Year Raceday takes place at Ayr Racecourse today (Thursday) with a competitive looking seven race card.
The feature race of the afternoon is Book Direct At Western House Hotel Handicap Hurdle over 2m 5f due off at 2.40pm and 10 runners go to post here.
Joint top weight is the Warren Greatrex trained Portrush Ted who runs in the famous McNeill Family colours and who won on his only hurdle start at Perth in August. Keith Dalgleish saddles Taxmeifyoucan, the mount of Brian Hughes and this horse also won on his last outing which came last month at Carlisle.
Champion jockey Richard Johnson is in action with four booked rides including three for trainer Olly Murphy. The best of those appears to be the £160,000 buy Blazer’s Mill, winner of a national hunt Flat race, who makes his hurdles debut in the Book For Coral Scottish Grand National Maiden Hurdle at 12.30pm.
The afternoon’s action ends with the Happy New Year From Ayr Racecourse Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race at 3.45pm and the nine strong field is headed by the Olly Murphy trained Champagnesuperover the mount of Adrian Heskin while Brian Hughes and Nicky Richards team up on Wetlands who was fourth in a similar contest at Newcastle in November.
The first race is at 12.30pm with gates open at 11.00am.
THE 2018-2019 jumps season at Ayr Racecourse gets under way on Monday with a six race card. The action kicks off at 12.55pm with a two mile four furlong maiden hurdle which could see some southern based trainers sending young horses on the long trip north.READ MORE
