Another big winner for Mike

MIKE Smith who trains just 10 miles from Ayr Racecourse produced a 28-1 surprise winner at his local track yesterday when Glasses Up won the Ayrshire Cancer Support “Confined” Novice Stakes over one mile two furlongs.

Having only his second run, the three year old formerly trained in Ireland by Joseph O'Brien showed a turn of foot to collar Home Before Dusk and win by a neck in the hands of Paddy Mathers.

A delighted Mike said : “He ran here two weeks ago but we didn’t really know if he would win this. He only cost me £2,000 and he’s a good horse who we should have some fun with.”

It was a double on the day for jockey Mathers who rode Society Queen to win the opening six furlong novice auction stakes at longs odds on of 1-4 for trainer Richard Fahey.

Another double winning jockey was Harrison Shaw who was successful on Perfect Words, 7-1, for trainer Marjorie Fife in the ayrshirecs.org Handicap and followed up on Economic Crisis, a 12-1 chance for Alan Berry in the Volunteer To Help Ayrshire Cancer Support Handicap.

The feature race of the afternoon, The Ayrshire Cancer Support James Bond Ball was won rather cosily by 9-2 joint favourite Alemaratalyoum for Dumfriesshire based trainer Iain Jardine and jockey Jamie Gormley.
