The Races
Next fixture - William Hill (Ayr) Gold Cup Festival
- Thursday 16th - Saturday 18th September
The William Hill (Ayr) Gold Cup Festival held in September at Ayr Racecourse is Scotland's biggest and richest flat racing festival.
There are seven races on Thursday and Friday and eight on Saturday with racing highlights including the three six furlong sprints - the William Hill (Ayr) Gold, Silver and Bronze Cups.
The William Hill (Ayr) Gold Cup, Europe's richest sprint handicap, with £150,000 in prize money, takes place on Saturday and who can forget the 2009 event when Frankie Dettori steered Jimmy Styles to victory and then delighted the huge crowd with a flying dismount.
That great image seen here made at least two front pages in newspapers and countless back pages. And Frankie milked the moment with some great television and radio interviews in which he claimed: "The Ayr Gold Cup is a race I have always wanted to win ever since I was in short trousers."
The William Hill (Ayr) Silver Cup is also run on the Saturday - about an hour before its big brother - while Friday sees the William Hill (Ayr) Bronze Cup being staged.
