AYR RACECOURSE ROCKS TO SAW DOCS AND DEACON BLUE
AYR Racecourse held its first ever rock
concert on Saturday May 26 when Deacon Blue and The Saw Doctors
headlined Rock At The Racecourse in front of more than 5000
fans.
The crowds started pouring into the course at 5pm and Deacon Blue left the stage just after 10.30 pm. For five and a half hours Ayr rocked and support acts Airspiel, The Ronelles, Redhouse, Noelie McDonnell and Kieran Docherty also deserve special mention.
Thousands packed the area in front of the stage as The Saw Doctors injected their own special brand of folk-rock. By the time their last song 'Hay Wrap' was in full swing a crowd of waving arms stretched as far as the eye could see.
Deacon Blue last played in Ayr several years ago at the Low Green, this time it was slightly higher profile and they responded with a rousing set culminating in 'Real Gone Kid' an anthemesque reminder of their glory days.
And bars and restaurants did a tremendous trade on the night with somewhere in the region of 8000 pints of beer and lager being drunk in a five and a half hour period.
Next week the track's management will sit down and discuss whether to hold more concerts at the site.
Ayr Racecourse spokesman Iain Ferguson said : "We had two quality headline bands who were awesome. The sound quality was excellent and the atmosphere was great.
"The bars and restaurants coped admirably with the demand on the night and its fair to say drink sales far exceeded our expectations."
"We were proud to be part of the Burns an'a'that Festival and I'd like to thank Linda McClure, Festival Chief Executive, for having faith in us to stage Rock At The Racecourse and to host the Gala Concert.
Bars, restaurants and hospitality areas in the course were packed but coped well and the whole event passed off without any incident.
