The mighty Frankel never raced at Ayr but his son Frankuus heads north tomorrow (Thursday) to contest the £65,000 Class 1 William Hill Doonside Cup on Doonside Cup Day, the start of the three day William Hill Ayr Gold Cup Festival.
The Mark Johnston trained three year-old colt won the Group 3 Rose of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock last month and will love the soft going at Ayr.
He will take on five opponents including the multiple Listed race winner Brendan Brackan, an eight year-old trained in Ireland by Ger Lyons who will have his usual rider Colin Keane in the plate. Other runners include Richard Fahey’s Forest Ranger and Hibou from the in-form Iain Jardine yard.
Elsewhere on tomorrow’s card Kevin Ryan runs Salazar, winner of a seven furlong novice stakes at the track in August, in the mile novice race that opens the card and Tom Eaves again takes the mount on the horse that runs in the colours of lats year’s William Hill Ayr Gold Cup winner Brando.
Before racing Old Firm football legends Arthur Numan and Paul Elliott are the guest stars at the Live Draw for this year’s William Hill Ayr Gold Cup.
