RECORD CROWDS AT AYR
HIGHEST EVER FRIDAY CROWD AT AYR
RECORD breaking crowds attended Ayr Racecourse's flagship meeting, the totesport Ayr Gold Cup Festival last week.
The Friday attendance of 6,300 was the biggest ever for the middle day of the Festival since the Ayr Gold Cup was switched from a Friday to a Saturday in 1992.
And the three day total of 22,630 was the highest for more than 30 years.
Saturday's crowd of 13,000 showed an 18% increase on the 10,993 who attended in 2006 and Friday's increase of 722 equated to a 13% hike while Thursday's figure of 3,330 showed was just marginally higher than last year's 3,321.
Hospitality at the course was sold out with more than 5,000 meals being served over the three days and bar takings were up by around 20%.
Ayr Racecourse General Manager William Gorol said : "Myself and the team here at Ayr are overwhelmed by these figures. We strive to increase year on year but this is exceptional.
"We were blessed with some exceptional weather on Saturday and its also fair to say the quality of racing over the three days was as good as its been."
