CROWDS ENJOY THE AUGUST SUNSHINE
Friday August 31, 2007
SUNSHINE greeted Ayr Racecourse's second August fixture on Wednesday which attracted a healthy crowd of around 2200 - a massive 800 up on the corresponding fixture last year.
Racegoers enjoyed some good action with the most impressive winner of the day, the Kevin Ryan trained two year-old Dubai Time in the opening race the Coke Zero European Breeders' Fund Maiden. Ridden by Neil Callan the 8/13 favourite won handily by four lengths from Harrison George (9/1).
The best finish of the day came in the Black Bottle Whisky Handicap over seven furlongs when Joshua's Gold (6/1), ridden by Stephen Donohoe and trained by Declan Carroll, held on by a fast diminishing short head from the 5/1 joint favourite Spinning.
Carluke based trainer Ian Semple is having a good season and he saddled 20/1 shot Abbondanza to land the Woodford Reserve Handicap under Tom Eaves. Making his first start for Semple, having previously been trained by Howard Johnson, the gelding won by a short head from Society Music (7/1).
Declan Carroll completed a double on the card when King Of Rhythm (7/1) led inside the final furlong to win by three quarters of a length from Just Lille (7/2). The winner, ridden by Neil Callan is owned by Bad Girls actress Clare King who was unable to attend as she is abroad working.
Linda Perratt's good run at her local course just failed to continue when Caviar Heights (25/1) was beaten a neck in the last, the Magners Irish Cider Handicap by Zain, trained by James Given and ridden by Royston Ffrench.
Other winners on the day were Ellens Academy (6/1) in the Maclachlan's Best Handicap and Comptonspirit (11/2) in the Tennents Lager Handicap.
The next action at Ayr is the three day totesport Ayr Gold Cup Festival running from Thursday September 20 until Saturday September 22.
Advance bookings are being taken for the meeting and there is 10 % discount for single bookings or 20 % for parties of 20 or more. Both offers are subject to bookings being made seven or more days in advance and you can book online at www.ayr-racecourse.co.uk or by calling 0870-8505666
