NEW YEAR FOUR TIMER FOR SCOTTISH TRAINERS
Thursday January 3, 2008
SCOTTISH based
trainers brought in the New Year at Ayr Racecourse by bagging four
winners on Wednesday.
A Lucinda Russell double and wins for Jim Goldie and Lenny Lungo provided the tartan touch for a meeting that attracted a crowd of 3200 - 500 up on last year's corresponding fixture.
Quws Law, a 3/1 chance provided Perth based Russell with her first winner of the day in the EBF Robert Dunn Plant Hire Novices' Hurdle. It looked as if the highly thought of hurdler would have to settle for second best behind Viking Rebel, the 5/4 favourite but somehow jockey Peter Buchanan managed to get his horse up on the line to win by half a length.
Lucinda's second winner came courtesy of Master Sebastian (7/2 fav) in the Happy New Year From Ayr Handicap Chase. Again ridden by Peter Buchanan the nine year old was winning the race for the third year in a row and won by a cosy two and a half lengths from Villon (5/1)
Jim Goldie not only trains Inch High, the 16/1 winner of the Simpson & Shaw Handicap Hurdle he also owns and bred the horse at his Uplawmoor stables. Given an enterprising ride from Richard McGrath the horse won by six lengths from Soubriquet (9/1).
Lenny Lungo has had a quiet season so far but the Dumfriesshire based trainer's Wild Cane Ridge (4/1) was the easiest winner of the day under Wilson Renwick in the Weddings At Western House Handicap Hurdle winning by 40 lengths from Percussionist.
The Howard Johnson - Denis O'Regan trainer-jockey team are flying at the moment and they landed a first and last race double with Bayonyx (7/4 fav) in the Book For The Coral Scottish Grand National Juvenile Novices Hurdle and Toy Gun (6/1) in the racinguk.tv Handicap Hurdle.
The other winner on the day was Silent Bay (9/1) in the Grey Abbey Novices Handicap Chase. The John Wade trained, Brian Hughes ridden gelding won by six lengths from Scrappie (13/2)
