BALTHAZAAR'S GIFT HEADS AYR GOLD CUP WEIGHTS
LUCA Cumani's four year old Balthazaar's Gift heads the weights for the totesport Ayr Gold Cup after being allocated 10st - 2 lbs higher than last year's runner up Borderlescott.

A total of 172 horses have entered for the race, Europe's richest sprint handicap, which will be run on Saturday September 22 and Fonthill Road, last year's winner, is on the 9st mark.

Last year's race was notable for the absence of any Dandy Nicholls runners. But this year the trainer, who has won four of the last seven runnings of the Gold Cup,has not forgotten to enter his team and has 20 horses pencilled in for the race which carries a prize fund of £121,000.

It is 32 years since a Scottish trained horse won the race in the shape of Roman Warrior and the best chances this time round seem to lie with Ian Semple's Appalachian Trail (9st 6lb)and the Jim Goldie pair River Falcon (8st 13lb) and Dhaular Dhar (8st 12lb).

The three day totesport Ayr Gold Cup Festival carries £500,000 in prize money for the first time with the most notable supporting races the Laundry Cottage Stud Firth Of Clyde Stakes, a Group 3 event with £60,000 on offer and the Doonside Cup, a Listed Race, with £50,000 in prize money. Both of these races are run on the Saturday while Friday's highlight is the £35,000 totesport Ayr Silver Cup.
